TE REO MAORI - THE MAORI LANGUAGE

Te Reo Maori is an official language of Aotearoa-New Zealand and considered a national treasure.  A survey in  2001 showed it was spoken well/very well by 9% of Maori, with another 35% having at least some Maori language skills.  It is at the core of the Maori culture and central to proceedings on the marae.

In recent years there have been significant efforts promoted by Te Taura Whiri i te reo Maori, the Maori Language Commission and Te Kohanga National Trust to sustain and grow the use of the language.
